Creating your Forever Home
You have decided to build the home of your dreams…you have the perfect block of land(or you have decided to do a Knockdown and rebuild)…but you want to make sure your future home has everything your heart desires as well as catering for your family and yourself getting older.
Here are a few tips on what to consider when designing your Forever Home:
1. Plan for Flexibility- Multi-purpose rooms: Design spaces that can evolve—like a guest room that doubles as a home office or a nursery that becomes a study or a downstairs bedroom that is next door to a powder room that can be converted to a full bathroom, so a teenager can have their own space and independence.
2. Think Long-Term Accessibility- Single-level living( if you can): Or think of Minimising stairs to accommodate for aging or mobility challenges (believe me I know how much knees hurt going up stairs now I am in my 50’s!!).Wide doorways and hallways will make it easier for wheelchairs, or walkers to navigate (and also look nicer). Think of Step-free entryways which are ideal for both convenience and safety.
3. Future-Proof Your Technology- Smart home infrastructure, install wiring and systems for automation, security, and energy management. The Energy Assessment and BASIX requirements are a huge factor in Building today, with double glazed windows and extra insulation as standard, but maybe try to think ahead with extra solar panels or wiring for your future.
4. Storage That Grows With You- Everyone knows that I love storage options!!Think of Built-in cabinetry(like actually everywhere!!) Custom storage solutions help keep clutter at bay and as children grow you need more places to put their things!!even think of garage storage. Plan for seasonal items, hobbies, or future family needs or where to put that large Christmas Tree.
5. Outdoor Spaces That Evolve- Low-maintenance landscaping is a must, especially when thinking of what you will be able to manage when you are older(unless you are a gardening guru!) Choose native plants and drought-tolerant designs. Think of Flexible outdoor zones that are areas for play, relaxation, and entertaining that can adapt over time. Your backyard maybe at first a mini playground but then you may want to convert it to a cosy Bali retreat, years down the track…. when swings and space for a football are no longer needed.
6. Choose Timeless Materials & Finishes- Look at neutral palettes and durable materials that won’t date quickly. (keep in mind some estates have set colour schemes). Maybe black or grey cabinetry won’t be as en vogue in a few years’ time, and will you still love the colour? Invest in quality fixtures that last and are easy to maintain ( take it from me stainless steel pendants do not stand the test of time).
Designing a forever home isn’t just about building for today—it’s about anticipating tomorrow.
By incorporating flexibility, accessibility, and sustainability, you can create a space that is perfect for a growing family and will also be perfect for when you are empty nesters and have time to relax and recharge in your beautiful, timeless home.
